My creative energies are obviously sapped by RL.  But to keep in touch with my ficcing roots, here's a short vignette from Utopia.  Sort of.

Title:  Drumbeat

Word count: 170
Summary: The drumming.  Can't you hear it?

Tappity tap.
Tappity tap.
Tappity tap.
Tappity tap.

It was driving him mad.  The sound came and went, randomly ensnaring his attention, distracting him when it contradicted the beat of the song playing on his phonograph, interrupting his thoughts when he sat at his desk, working a difficult calculation, awaking him in the middle of the night, confusing him into thinking there was someone at the door to his room.  He'd lost count of the times he'd checked the pipes for leaks and the walls for signs of rodents or bugs, without finding the source of the infuriating sound.

Tappity tap. 

Even when it wasn't there, it was still there.  In the back of his mind, drowned out by the busy prattle of daily activity, to resurface in sudden, quiet moments and stir his fingers or his foot into senselessly keeping time with it.  He often found himself measuring his strides to the invisible beat, which never changed, and by virtue of not changing, was slowly changing him.

There.  Now I've done something productive to justify the last four hours of useless computering at my computering box.

I noticed that! But it's so rare to find fics linked that aren't Ten/Rose that I'll always start to read them, at least. And in this case, I'm very glad I did.

Hahaha, I understand that sentiment only too well! Our fandom gives us literally all of space and time to choose from, and people keep choosing Ten/Rose. It boggles the mind, truly.

I know, right? I mean, there are so many pairings to write. Even if we completely ignore Old Who, you've still got Nine, Jackie, Mickey, Jack, Martha, Donna...so many other characters to play with. And fic doesn't have to be shippy either. I like my gen just as much as I like my Ten/Martha, if not more in some cases.
