Ficathons? Prompts? Help!

So, I'm in a bit of a ficcing rut.  Many of you on my f-list do prompts and fic challenges and ficathons and such, and so I've been wondering if maybe I shouldn't give that kind of thing a go since my muse is notoriously unreliable.  Trouble is, I don't know where to find out about them and sign up.  Are there regular, well-known ficathons and challenges that happen at set intervals, or is it more of a free-for-all?  How does this whole thing work?  What communities should I get involved with?  So...yeah.  Help!

I've been watching a rather large ficfest in the works for a week or two now - it's the [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest. They've now got all the prompts in, and prompt claiming ends on the 15th - you have to claim a posting date too. Don't know if it'd be your thing, but it's seriously multi-fandom and I doubt all the writers will be LGBT themselves :o) So, that's one option. I don't know of any others having or about to have a ficathon or anything, but I do watch quite a few, so I'll keep an eye out for you :o)

LGBT isn't normally my thing, but I've been wondering if I should start expanding my repertoire, maybe it'll help my rut. Groovy, though, thanks for the tip!
