MJ's public persona was basically an act.

In retrospect, that makes so much sense. Look at his videos and live performances. The man was one hell of a performance artist. What better way to preserve your privacy and protect yourself than to create a "character" of obfuscating weirdness to hide behind in public? Jackson loved to create and innovate, but I don't think he realized how good a job he did with it until the criminal charges hit. A talented performance artist, Jackson was. Too much for his own good.

Back in '03, after Martin Bashir's damning television special aired about life with Michael Jackson, Jackson responded with a 2 hr. Fox special (viewable on youtube in 11 parts) called "Michael Jackson's Private Home Movies." I'd completely forgotten about it until I browsed youtube and found it again. And, HOLY COW, THE MAN IS COMPLETELY HUMAN. But the damage had already been done. What a tragedy.

How long til his biography hits Broadway, do you think?
